Kalle Keskrand’s installation on the windows of the train station building in Jõhvi looked at the fates of Estonian family photo albums, contrasting them with the “Who Were They?” photos used by Soviet propaganda. These were infamous illustrations of the archetypical enemies of the people: factory owners, real estate owners, spies and other criminals.
58 train wagons left Jõhvi train station on 26 March 1949 with 1,282 people on board, of whom 614 were women and 401 children. The destination was Abakan in Khakassia. Our programme included hanging a sign bearing the name “Abakan” on the Jõhvi train station building and planting a Novosibirsk bird cherry tree next to the former train station building. |
